Soon after New Zealand band Two Lane Blacktop (named after the Monte Hellman movie) broke up in 2003, guitarist/vocalist Pip Brown moved to Australia. While living in Sydney she worked with several bands, including Teenager and Pnau. By 2006 she had begun creating songs on her own, playing all of the instruments, under the name Ladyhawke (named after the Richard Donner movie). She relocated once more at the end of 2007, this time to London, where she recorded her debut album for Modular, working with several different producers. The sound was strongly '80s-influenced, leaning heavily on the synth.
